This week I realised a long-held dream to be in Spain for Holy Week. As it turned out, it was more by accident than design that we happened to be in Alicante on Palm Sunday; it was only after booking that we discovered it would coincide with the start of the Semana Santa processions. Having seen photos and footage of the more famous processions in Seville, I was half expecting something with an eerie or almost sinister edge. I couldn’t have been more wrong. Instead, it was a dignified, solemn, respectful and above all family occasion with men, women and children of all ages joining together to celebrate and continue this most particular of religious spectacles. Happy Easter.
