It’s been a few years since I last read The Great Gatbsy but it will always have a special place in my heart as the first ‘grown up’ novel I really loved when I first encountered it at school. Along with most of the English Literature class I was fairly unimpressed back then by Robert Redford’s Gatsby, feeling that the screen version failed to do justice to the book. But maybe we were just hard-to-please teenagers.
Even so, I’m a little apprehensive about the forthcoming blockbuster by Baz Luhrmann. I don’t envy any director trying to take on such a jealously guarded classic, but first impressions of the trailer indicate that he’s not holding back with his signature opulent style. If the online comments are anything to go by it’s going to divide opinion, but, since trailers can be misleading, I’ll hold fire until I’ve actually seen it.
